Grades 2 to 6 - "Building an Aboiteau and a Dyke" ($3.90 per student)
This activity lasts 45 to 60 minutes. Students will learn how Acadians used the reclaimed marshlands around the Baie Française (Bay of Fundy) and le Bassin des Mines (Minas Basin), by building "aboiteaux" (Acadian sluices) and dykes to drain the land and to stop the sea from coming back on the land at high tide. Students will work in teams of four to discover how to build a dyke and in teams of two to build an "aboiteau". This program utilizes Lego bricks. Students will also have the opportunity to see a full size model of a cross-section of a dyke as well as a aboiteau dating from 1686 and found in 2006 not more than a kilometre from Grand-Pré National Historic Site.

Grades 4 to 9 - "The Mysterious Mixed up Artifacts" ($3.90 per student) Indoor activity that lasts 45 to 60 minutes. Imagine life in 17th and 18th Century Acadia through its artifacts. Objects made by humans represent a complete gamut of activities; among them, the most fundamental are linked to our essential needs: eating, drinking and protecting ourselves from the elements. Even without written documentation, objects can speak eloquently about their users. Students will help uncover the past using systematic approach of the archaeologist: practicing focused observation, classification, comparison, in a team-work context. The degree of complexity for this activity varies according to the grade level.

This activity also involves an analytical component in which students work independently in small groups to come to conclusions based on the Six Hats concept.

CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES TO DOWNLOAD
Société Promotion Grand-Pré offers stimulating activities to bring Acadian history and culture to life in your classroom.
As you know, the classroom can be used to promote meaningful cultural learning experiences. The students will learn, appreciate and understand the determination that Acadian culture has demonstrated and still shows in the 21st Century. Places make connections across time that help develop empathetic understanding of what happened and why. We have worked hard to develop activities for students with this in mind. We hope that you will help bring our historic site into your classroom.
