Title: Réveil Unveiled on September 5th, 2004, in the main lobby of the Visitor Reception and Interpretation Centre at Grand-Pré National Historic Site, the large mural painting by Wayne Boucher uses the Acadian flag as the basic source for evoking the tragedy of the Deportation and the nobility of the Acadian people.
The Deportation Cross, erected by the Acadians in 1924, becomes the central support from which the family tree develops. The Deportation of the Acadians is portrayed in the blue section by the abstract patterning of a mass of bent over individuals moving towards the orange form that represents Cape Blomidon. The flames in the red section of the painting express not only the trauma of the Deportation, but also the uplifting passion that strengthens the Acadian people. Done in an abstract style, the painting creates a dynamic movement that evokes both tension and harmony.
CALL FOR ENTRIESMural Artwork PURPOSEThis Call for Entries invites submissions from artists residing in Canada and the Unites States of America who wish to compete for award of a contract valued at CDN $25,000 to create a mural artwork (8 feet high x 12 feet wide) to be installed at Grand-Pré National Historic Site of Canada. The mural will be completed and installed in time for its official unveiling in July 2004.
PROJECT BACKGROUNDA new Visitor Reception and Interpretation Centre was built at Grand-Pré NHSC. The mural will be prominently displayed in its Reception Hall, and will commemorate the historic events that occurred in the Grand-Pré area of Nova Scotia during the summer and fall of 1755. It will communicate the catastrophic impact that the 1755 Deportation had on the lives of the French-speaking Acadian People who lived in the Grand-Pré area. It will convey their anguish and despair at being forced into exile by New England and British Colonial authorities; the trauma of suddenly being separated from friends and family; losing one's home and possessions; and one's community to face a new life of fear, hardship, hostility, and uncertainty.
Visitors to Grand-Pré begin their visit at the Visitor Centre. The Reception Hall is the heart of this facility. Located in the centre of the Reception Hall is a staffed visitor reception counter.
The mural will be displayed on a freestanding wall located immediately behind the reception desk. The impression the mural makes on visitors at this point will strongly influence the rest of their visit. The mural will be the most important visual element in the Reception Hall, and will help draw visitors to the reception desk. The winner of this competition will be contracted to create an artwork on canvas that strongly conveys the following fundamental messages:
The awful tragedy of the Deportation of 1755; COMPETITION FORMATThis competition will include the following stages: Stage 1Call for EntriesArtists are invited to submit slide portfolios of their artwork to a project jury. Five (5) artists will be chosen through this process, and will be invited to participate in Stage 2 (Concept Development). Stage 2Mural Concept DevelopmentThe five (5) successful artists from Stage 1 will be invited to submit their concept for the Grand-Pré mural. The mural concept proposal will consist of: Each artist will be paid an honorarium of CDN $750.00 upon submission of a mural concept proposal that satisfies the conditions outlined above. The project jury will evaluate these submissions, whereupon three (3) of the five artists will be invited to participate in Stage 3 (Maquette Development). Stage 3
Maquette DevelopmentThe three (3) successful artists from Stage 2 will be invited to create a fully detailed maquette of their Grand-Pré mural concept. The maquette will be a finished artwork measuring 24 inches high by 36 inches wide. It will serve as the detailed scale model for the final mural, and will be evaluated accordingly by the project jury.
Each artist will be paid an honorarium of CDN $1,500.00 upon submission of a fully detailed maquette. A contract to produce the mural will be awarded to the creator of the winning maquette.
Stage 4Contract for Mural ProductionThe winning artist chosen from Stage 3 will be awarded a contract to faithfully reproduce his/her winning maquette on artist's canvas on a scale of eight (8) feet high by twelve (12) feet wide. The fixed-fee value of the contract will be CAN $25,000. As part of this contract, the winning artist will make any changes to the composition of his/her maquette that may be required by the project jury, before transferring the image to full scale. Once the full-scale mural artwork is completed and approved by the project jury, the contracted artist will be responsible for having the artwork securely rolled up and shipped to Grand-Pré NHSC, where Parks Canada specialists will mount it in the Visitor Centre's Reception Hall. Stage 2Mural Concept Development Stage 3May 27, 2004 Stage 4. Contract for Production of MuralJune 11, 2004 MURAL ARTWORK - COMPOSITIONAL AND STYLISTIC REQUIREMENTSThe Grand-Pré Visitor Centre mural will measure 8 feet high x 12 feet wide. It does not have to be created in a style that is highly realistic, but should be representational to the extent that visitors must clearly recognize its subject matter - the mass deportation of the Acadian People, and the psychological, emotional, and physical trauma they experienced. The mural composition must be clearly discernable from a distance of up to 50 ft., but must also retain visitors' attention as they make their way from the Visitor Centre entrance through the Reception Hall to the reception desk.
The winning artist will be required to create the mural on canvas in such a way that it can be rolled up and shipped to Grand-Pré NHSC without being damaged in the process. While collage will be considered as a technique for creating the mural, all materials and techniques used by the contracted artist must meet the requirement to create a durable mural that can be safely shipped and installed in the manner described.

PROJECT JURYThe project jury will be composed of representatives from the Société Promotion Grand-Pré, Parks Canada, and from the visual arts community. See COMPETITION FORMAT for an explanation of the jury's role in this project.
CALL FOR ENTRIES - SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTSSubmit ten (10) 35mm professional-quality slides of your artwork in standard mounts. Your slides should be representative samples of your work, and should be as relevant as possible to the type of subject matter and the stylistic parameters outlined for this project. Label each slide clearly as follows:
