Commemoration of the Deportation of the Acadians from Grand-Pré
Historic re-enactment of the assembling of 418 Acadian men and boys in the church at Grand-Pré on September 5th, 1755
At 3 o’clock in the afternoon of September 5, 1755, Lieutenant Colonel John Winslow read the Order of Deportation to the 418 Acadian men and boys who were being held prisoner in the church at Grand-Pré, which had been transformed into a command post. And so began the deportation of the inhabitants of the Grand-Pré region. The last transport ship left Minas Basin on December 20, 1755.
1:30 pm - Assembling of 418 men and boys (women and girls are welcome as well) to help us determine the size of the original Saint-Charles-des-Mines church.
This living history event will take place at Grand-Pré on Sunday, September 5th, 2010. Admission to Grand-Pré National Historic Site will be free for every one. People are invited to arrive by 1:30 pm so that the process of assembling can be finished at exactly 3 o’clock in time for the annual reading of the Order of Deportation. Period costumes are encouraged but not compulsory. The event will be followed by a commemorative walk from Grand-Pré to the old Wharf in Horton Landing (approx. 2 km). |
