Acadian Quest: New Minas Day Camps Visit Grand-Pré

GRAND-PRÉ, July 16, 2008 – Over 80 children from the New Minas Recreation Centre Day Camps visited Grand-Pré National Historic Site today. Ranging in age from 6 to 13 years, they came armed with a picnic lunch and lots of sun screen lotion. Their aim was to learn about the Acadians. They were divided into eleven groups. Their visit was designed like a treasure hunt, except that instead of looking for treasures they had to find answers to questions or do something specific like hugging a giant weeping willow tree or taking a picture of Evangeline. Among the leaders was Mr Maynard Stevens, President of the Kings County Historical Society. Dressed in period costume and standing in the shade of an old chesnut tree, he told the children about the significance of Grand-Pré and pointed out the dykelands and the old French willows. After lunch, the children headed off to play in the sand at Evangeline Beach.
