Geophysical surveys of this area conducted in 2003 and 2004 gave strange results. The readings indicated the presence of buried stone across a large area, measuring approximately 55m east-west by 40m north-south. The area in which the stone is distributed appears roughly rectangular in shape, which suggests that humans - rather than nature - might be responsible. However, the instrument detected no evidence of patterns in the distribution of the stone that might indicate the remains of old building foundations. Furthermore, the readings suggested the stones were small and more spread out than in other locations, such as the areas surveyed near the memorial church.
Saint Mary's University students commenced excavations here in July 2004. To get a better sense of the underlying archaeology, the students dug a large number of small 'test units' in a grid pattern over a large area.
The results came as a bit of a surprise, as the students discovered the remains of previously unrecorded architectural features in at least two places.
