9 Reasons to Visit or Revisit Grand Pré in 2012 PDF Print E-mail

 

1) If you haven’t visited Grand Pré since 2003, you haven’t seen the beautiful Visitor Centre and the first class exhibits on Acadian history.

2) Since 1999, Parks Canada has greatly increased the size of the grounds of Grand Pré. The latest land purchase provides a spectacular view of the surrounding dyked marshlands. Come visit the viewpark at the top of Old Post Road.

3) Did you know that you can walk or picnic on the grounds at Grand-Pré for nothing? Entrance to the grounds is free. Picnic tables are waiting for you. Throughout the season, the flowers, shrubs and trees are magnificent.

4) Are you interested in art? Come and see the exhibits in our art gallery. This year, on July 1st, Canada Day, three sculptors (Monette Léger - Acadian, Gerald Gloade - Mi'kmaq and Doug Morse - New Enland Planter descendant) will be unveiling their sculpture from the old elm tree that once stood near the Deportation Cross at Horton Landing: Three Cultures, One land, Rich in History.

5) Are you a fan of geocaching? Admire one of the most beautiful historic sites in the Martimes while you are trying to find the treasure at Grand Pré.

6) Are you Acadian? Did your ancestors live in Grand Pré before the Deportation? Come and examine the lists of Acadian names in the memorial church. Les Amis de Grand-Pré do genealogical research in English and French: follow this link.

7) Do you like to combine history and outdoor exercise? Walk from the national historic site along the dirt road that goes through the fields to Horton Landing. You will come to the Deportation Cross that marks the area from which the Acadians were loaded onto boats and deported in 1755. Download the map .

8) Are you looking for books on the Acadians? Are you looking for gifts? The Boutique in the Visitor Centre has an excellent selection of books in French and English and all kinds of attractive souvenirs of Grand Pré.

9) Would you like to learn how to paint? Come for a painting lesson from one of the nine artists who will be in residence during the months of July and August. You pay only $5.00 for materials for a 2-hour lesson. Come as often as you please. Learn from different artists...
