GRAND-PRÉ (Nova Scotia), August 11, 2008
– The Société Promotion Grand-Pré invites every one to come and
celebrate the Acadian National Holiday at Grand-Pré National Historic
Site on August 15th. Admission is FREE (except for
commercial groups) all day Friday, August 15th.
From 10:30 am to 3 pm, children can take part in
various workshops and games such as Frisbee and Dodgeball.
A special mass, celebrated by Father Albéni
d’Entremont, will start at 11 o’clock under the weeping willows. If it
rains, the mass will take place in the Visitor Centre. Musical
accompaniment for the mass will be provided by the Quebec harpist
Johanne McInnis.
At noon, the Acadian flag will be raised to the sounds
of Ave Maris Stella, the Acadian anthem. After the raising of the
flag, Acadian cakes and lemonade will be served by les Ami(e)s de
Grand-Pré.
Throughout the afternoon, the Acadian
singer-songwriter, Jeanne Doucet Currie will wander around the grounds
singing her own up-beat and high energy songs.
At 1 pm, 3 pm, and 5 pm, the Quebec harpist Johanne
McInnis will be giving workshops on the harp. She will talk about the
history of the harp, the different kinds of harps and she will show
participants how to play this ancient instrument. The workshops will
be 45 minutes and cost $10 per person or $12 per family (maximum of 12
people per workshop).
The presence of about 100 children from the French
summer camps in Halifax-Dartmouth will certainly contribute to the
festive atmosphere of the day. They will be taking part in a program
of special activities to discover the history and importance of
Grand-Pré.
