Unveiling of the "Deportation" Sculpture at Grand-Pré on September 3rd, 2006

27 August 2006

It was at 3 o'clock on September 5th, 1755, that Lieutenant-Colonel John Winslow ordered the men and boys of Grand-Pré to meet in Saint-Charles-des-Mines church so that he could read them the Deportation Order.

The Société Promotion Grand-Pré undertook the creation of an artwork to commemorate in a special way the Deportation of Acadians, during the time known as Le Grand Dérangement. The artwork is a bronze sculpture representing an Acadian family during that time.

The members of the Board of Directors of the Société Promotion Grand-Pré will unveil this artwork on Sunday, September 3rd, 2006, during a ceremony held at the Grand-Pré National Historic Site. It is their hope that this artwork will become a powerful icon to symbolize the tearing apart of Acadian families during the Great Upheaval.

The members of the board wish to thank the benefactors who, through their generous contribution, helped make this project a reality.
