Talks
on the
Mi’kmaq presence and the interactions between the Mi’kmaq and the
Acadians
- Talks Facilitator : Jean Gaudet -
1:30 - 2:30 p.m.: Talk by Bill Wicken, entitled
" Enemies or Allies?: Mi'kmaq and Acadians in
the 18th Century. There are many reasons to believe the
Acadians enjoyed a warm and amicable relationship with the Mi'kmaq.
There are also many reasons to believe that the two were bitter
enemies. This talk will examine these issues. (In English)
Professor of History at York University, William Wicken holds three
degrees from McGill University. He devoted his doctoral thesis to
“Encounters with Tall Sails and Tall Tales: Mi’kmaq Society, 1500-1700."
His book Mi’kmaq Treaties on Trial: History, Land and Donald Marshall
Junior (U of Toronto Press) received the Canadian Historical
Association Clio Award for the best book on Atlantic Canada published in
2002. His chapters in the collective work The ‘Conquest’ of Acadia,
1710 are amazing testimonies to the challenges of reconstructing
non-written and
unrecorded
history.
2:30 - 3:30 p.m.: Talk by Sister Dorothy Moore,
entitled "The Sacredness of Language"- Like other
languages, Mi'kmaq is more than its usage. It is in the mind, soul and
spirit of the culture. (In English) – Sister Dorothy
will be introduced by Don Julien, Executive Director of The
Confederacy of Mainland Mi'kmaq.
Sister Dorothy Moore is a well-known Mi’kmaq
educator from Cape Breton. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters
of St. Martha’s after graduating from high school. A graduate of the
NS Teachers’ College, St. Francis Xavier University and Mount St.
Vincent University, she served as the Native Education Coordinator at
University College of Cape Breton. Sister Dorothy Moore was very
instrumental in introducing courses on Mi’kmaq history and culture
into the Nova Scotia school system. Before retiring, she was Director
of Mi’kmaq Services for the Nova Scotia Department of Education.
3:30 - 4:30 p.m.: Talk by Ronnie-Gilles Leblanc - La communauté métisse en Acadie - un
regard sur les relations europo-amérindiennes avant 1755 (provisional
title) (in French) - To date, studies on the relations
between the Europeans and their descendants with the native community
in the former colony of Acadie dealt mostly with the dealings of the
French and British colonial administrations with the First Nations. So
what, if anything at all, has been written about the relationship that
existed between the Acadian community and the First Nations people,
and especially with the Métis community which was the result of this
interaction?
After working for over
twenty years as Archivist at the "Centre d'études acadiennes" at the
University of Moncton, Ronnie-Gilles LeBlanc has recently joined the
ranks of Parks Canada Agency staff as Historian in their Halifax
Regional Office. Holding a degree in History from Laval University,
Mister LeBlanc is responsable for writing the "Cahiers de la Société historique acadienne" for many years now, and has written several
articles that appeared in periodicals, as well as having directed the
collection called: "Du Grand Dérangement à la Déportation. Nouvelles
perspectives historiques", in which he has published two chapters
dealing with the impact of the Great Upheaval on the Acadian community
of Pigiguit.
7:00
- 8:30 p.m. Talk - The Grand-Pré Cemetery at Grand-Pré: Testimony
of the Past - Susan Surette-Draper and Sally Ross, followed by a visit of
the cemetery.
Despite the fact that the cemetery of the old Saint-Charles-des-Mines
Church has disappeared from the landscape, it constitutes the human
memory of the largest pre-Deportation Acadian community. We will begin
by placing this cemetery in a cultural and historic context and then
we will pay tribute to some of the emblematic individuals who are
buried there.
Historian and translator, Sally Ross is co-author
of The Acadians of Nova Scotia and author of Les écoles
acadiennes en Nouvelle-Écosse, 1758-2000 and Dykes and
Aboiteaux. She has been studying Acadian cemeteries in Nova Scotia
since 2003.
An Acadian from South-West Nova Scotia, Susan
Surette-Draper is co-president of Les Amis des Grand-Pré. She is the
author of the bilingual booklet entitled Return to Acadie and
she worked as a guide at Grand-Pré National Historic Site for five
years.

OFFICIAL ROYAL PROCLAMATION DAY
commemorating the Deportation
28 July
Commemoration of Le Grand Dérangement (The Acadian Deportation) - An
invitation to participate
On the 28th of July, Canada recognizes annually the
deportation of les Acadiens. This is the date in 1755 on which Gouvernor
Lawrence signed the order to deport the population of over 12,000 men,
women and children. There will be many events and ceremonies through the
Maritimes to commemorate the events of 1755, to honour the survival of
the Acadien People, and to work to restoring right relationships with
our First Nation’s peoples.

July 28 -
Inter-cultural & Inter-spiritual service of Hope & Healing All Are
Welcome!
Light of Hope & Healing-Gesture of Solidarity (Candle Vigil) Please join
us!
The members of Covenanter Church in Grand-Pré invite
church members from all over Canada, and Members of the United Church of
Christ (U.S), to light a candle the evening of July 28th and place it in
a window of their home facing into their community as a sign of
solidarity with and recognition of les Acadiens. Some congregations may
choose to also participate in the Candle gesture at their Sunday Worship
service (perhaps the Sunday preceding July 28th) by lighting a candle
during worship. Several congregations in Nova Scotia prepared candles
with blue, white and red ribbons to give to members the previous Sunday
so they could light a candle at home.
Ringing Bells in Remembrance and Recognition Please join us!
In conjunction with churches across Acadia,
Covenanter Church in Grand-Pré, Nova Scotia, is inviting all Churches to
join them in ringing bells for two minutes starting at 5:55 p.m.(17h55)
local time and in following this with two minutes of silence to reflect
on the tragic events of Le Grand
Dérangement. Some congregations may wish to place a notice in
a local publication to inform their communities of the reason for this
ringing of bells (Please see below for an add suggestion). You may also
want to turn this into an ecumenical activity by inviting neighbouring
churches to participate. If your church has programmable chimes, you
could follow the ringing of bells or chimes and the observance of two
minutes of silence with Ave Maris Stella, the Acadian anthem. If your
church is not equipped with bells, the congregation could approach the
local town or city hall and neighbouring churches to ask for their
support of this gesture.
5:55 p.m. (17:55)
A bell will toll at the Memorial Church of the
Grand-Pré National Historic Site of Canada
5:55 p.m. (17:55)
at the ringing of the bell, the Covenanter Church of Grand-Pré (1989
Grand-Pré Rd) will hold an Ecumenical, multi-cultural, and multi-lingual
Commemorative Service with a liturgy of hope, healing and solidarity
with the First Nations, Acadians and English descendants.
Service begins with Bell of Remembrance at 5:55 p.m. (17:55). A
candle-light «Walk of Solidarity» to the Grand Pré Historical site is
held immediatly following the service. (approx.1.7km)
